Labour councillors in Birmingham have voted to accept the closure of swimming pools and leisure centres in the city. This brings the possible closure of Castle Pool on Castle Vale one step closer. Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Ann Holtom commented: "Labour's 'vision' for leisure in Birmingham will inevitably lead to closures and to precious NHS money being wasted propping up inefficient services. The vote makes it even more important that residents support the campaign to save Castle Pool by signing the petition which is circulating at the moment. The District Committee meets on 30 July to decide the fate of the pool and will take their lead from the main council vote unless residents' voices are loud enough."
When the city council debated the plan this week, Liberal Democrats voted against any closures, calling for public health money to be used properly to ensure all those with health needs use facilities across the city.
