Ann Holtom's important and impressive victory in the Tyburn Ward election on 1 May was one of the results highlighted by the Birmingham press after the declarations last week.
The Birmingham Mail commented: "Coun Ann Holtom, who defected from Labour to the Liberal Democrats in 2006, piled on the misery for her former party by holding Tyburn ward". (Birmingham Mail 2 May) Ann was recorded as saying: "I am delighted to have kept this seat and to see the voters have recognised how much effort the Liberal Democrats have put in around Tyburn."
The Birmingham Post featured Birmingham City Council Group Leader Paul Tilsley in their report praising Ann for achieving her win: " In Tyburn, .... Ann Holtom won the seat for the Liberal Democrats with a majority of 508 and a swing of almost 20 per cent. Liberal Democrat group leader Paul Tilsley said: "We are cock-a-hoop over this..." (Birmingham Post - 2 May)
It was a good night for the Liberal Democrats in Birmingham. At risk from the national swing achieved by the Conservatives and hard fighting from Labour and Respect in some areas , they held every ward they were defending including one where last year a seat was lost. As the Birmingham Post reported: "Predictions of serious losses for the Liberal Democrats in inner city wards proved to be unfounded. The Lib Dem group [were] on course to go through the night without losing a single seat".
In a statement on Birmingham Lib Dems website Cllr Tilsley has thanked all those who supported the Liberal Democrats and contributed to a "fantastic night" for the party in Birmingham.
