The Sutton Coldfield and Erdington Liberal Democrats have selected Dr Richard Brighton as their candidate to fight the forthcoming general election in the Sutton Coldfield constituency.
Dr Brighton is a medical doctor with years of experience in hospital practice and as a consultant in public health medicine. He is currently working in the private sector. Dr Brighton was the Lib Dem candidate in Birmingham Selly Oak constituency at the 2005 general election when he raised the Lib Dem share of the vote by nearly 7% while the Labour and Conservative candidates both lost support. He is a former member of the North Birmingham Primary Care Trust.
He knows the Sutton Coldfield area well. He brings experience, an analytical mind and passion to the role of Parliamentary candidate and will be a strong and effective voice for the people of Sutton Coldfield.
Addressing a party meeting in Sutton Coldfield last week, Dr Brighton set out his campaign objectives for the general election. He said: "I will work for a fair society, where people are encouraged and enabled to improve themselves and the community around them. I am committed to the provision of high quality public services that are effective and easily available locally. I firmly believe that government should minimise interventions and allow for personal freedom from the state."
