The Liberal Democrats and the campaign for a Sutton Coldfield Town Council

The Liberal Democrat candidates for the local elections in the Sutton wards on May 22 (Hugh Duffy, Four Oaks; Trevor Holtom, New Hall; Sally Lippiatt, Trinity and Lyn Williams, Vesey) have issued a statement supporting the campaign to devolve power to an elected Town Council for Sutton Coldfield and welcoming the decision by Birmingham Liberal Democrats to include a commitment in its manifesto to setting up a Sutton Town Council, subject to its approval by residents in a referendum.

The candidates say that as Liberal Democrats they fullly support the idea of devolution and want to see greater autonomy for Sutton Coldfield. They strongly hope that a large measure of the independence that the Royal Town lost on being made part of Birmingham in 1974 can be restored giving local residents more of a direct say over the issues that matter most to them, in particular planning, protection of the Green Belt and the town centre redevelopment
